Snow often complicates game night situations so here is our policy on what happens during snowy days when there is enough snow that creates potentially challenging driving situations.
There are plenty of variations and possibilities of what may occur during snowy times in Vancouver…too numerous to discuss in detail, although we will touch on a few below. The key things to remember are the following points:
DETAILS
Cancelling games due to slippery road conditions while schools are still open will not be called by the league. This is because the School Board does not allow groups to freely cancel bookings based solely on slick driving conditions without charging cancellation fees, nor do they provide credits for un-played games caused by these same issues. For this reason, we are pretty much in a situation where we have to keep the games ‘on’, as scheduled.
If games are cancelled due to schools being closed, the league will not be able to make-up lost games because that would mean extending the season which in turn creates a new problem in April. Extending a season will create scheduling issues and overlaps with other sports for players and teams who sign up for other leagues at that time.
We do NOT want to encourage or force players and teams to “HAVE TO” come out to play and understand that the choice to come to a game in slippery conditions, are completely the choice of the individual drivers and players.
Trust your instincts and please do not ever feel that the league is forcing you to play. If you or your team feels that it’s unsafe to go out and travel to your game, please do stay home BUT, players should communicate with their team reps to say that they are not coming so that the team rep can start making some team decisions about the team’s status. In turn, the team reps may also need to possibly reach out to opposing team reps and even the league if necessary in order to decide what to do about a scheduled game that hasn’t already been cancelled.
The league will endeavor to be more understanding in situations like this but does not have much choice as to how they deal with defaults that may occur.
Communications between players, team reps and the league are very important. In such scenarios, issues can be resolved simply by early communications. If players or teams just decide NOT to show up without letting another team rep or the league know in advance (hopefully more than 2 hours in advance of game time) then they must be prepared to accept the consequences that occur due to the non-communication (like default wins granted for opposing team ‘no-shows’).
When a team promptly communicates to an opposing team rep that they will not be able to field a team, that gives us all a better chance to communicate with the opposing team. This also allows your scheduled opponent to call off their players and just call the game an ‘un-played’ one.
If the teams mutually agree to cancel their own game, they know that there will be no make-up game and can then simply post the result of that game as 0-0 tie which will give both teams 2 points in the standings. A tie cannot be called until BOTH teams communicate with each other and agree to not play. Put another way, a team cannot autocratically mark their game a 0-0 tie simply because the players on their own team decided not to show up.
If you cannot reach a team or can’t get a prompt response back (within an hour after reaching out), contact the league and inform us that you’ve made attempts to reach the opposing team and we will also try to help reach someone from the other team.
Are there fee adjustments made due to game cancellations and /or School Closures?
Short answer, no. When games get cancelled due to school closures, there are no credits or refunds given to players or teams for the lost games.
Our fees are not based on how much you play but rather as a ‘fee-to-participate’. The league does often add games to schedules to create doubleheaders for divisions that have an odd number of teams in it, rather than having teams sit out. The league does not charge more money for more games in those situations therefore we will not reduce total monies paid for the loss of playing opportunities either.
