REGISTRATIONS FOR THE FALL 2024 SEASON OPENS AUGUST 23rd, 2024 FOR RETURNING TEAMS & SEPTEMBER 3rd FOR NEW TEAMS

Our focus is on LISTENING to the needs of volleyball players and teams and fulfilling on those needs to the best of our ability given the means we have to work with so that our teams feel heard, respected and have a sense of being included in the decisions, updates and offerings this league makes. The focus is on the needs that would help the majority of teams and players versus the needs of one or two teams/players however.

The League offers convenience, flexibility and a variety of skill levels that are the best fit for the players' skill sets that fit inside their busy lives. Loyalty is rewarded. Camaraderie is encouraged and supported as is sportsmanship. All recreational skill levels are welcome to come play with us whether they are a group of friends or a corporate team.

The co-ed leagues offered focus on a competitive balance amongst our various levels of play for players and teams who may not be blessed with an elite level of talent or skills but who love this sport and want to play it with their friends and/or colleagues as often as their busy schedules will allow. There's a balance in male/female 'on-court' ratios thereby making us a 'true co-ed' league. Players generally find that with 'True Coed' ratios that there's not quite as much 'edginess' that you more often find with '4 men & 2 women' leagues and it gives women more of a chance to play more offense!

There are 3 distinct seasons. Fall, Winter & Spring. The seasons are offered both in package deals or one-season-at-a-time (check the 2 pricing pages for current prices). Each season will be 11 weeks long each and include a 3-week playoff. All prices include GST in the listed price so that what you see is the price you pay along with a 'one-time', new-team registration fee of $12.60. Earn cash-back referral bonuses if you bring another team in with you when you register. Cash referrals pay $50 cash back per season that they play during that first year - applicable to the Fall & Winter seasons between September and mid-April. All they have to do when they register is share the name or the team or person that referred them! The Spring League goes from mid-April and to late-June.

We regularly monitor and evaluate the skill levels of our teams (based on game results) and will shift teams to more 'competitively-appropriate' divisions within the same night that they choose to play within the Fall & Winter seasons. The Spring league does see more of a mix of skill levels.

This FUN league is a simple, indoor volleyball league that starts their Fall season between late-September (or early-October) to mid-December. The Winter season starts in early January and goes to early-April and Spring season starts in mid-April (immediately after the Winter season playoffs are completed) to almost the end of June. Locations of the games are at various Vancouver Public School gymnasiums (and the odd Rec Center gym) within the boundaries of the City of Vancouver and consist of a balance of gyms located west of Granville, east of Fraser and between Granville & Fraser.

By keeping all the games within the city, it reduces travel time and focuses on the most important part of the game...PLAYING! And another perk, because we play in smaller, more intimate gyms, play never has to be interrupted on account of a "BALL" call because there's a stray ball on the court. There are rarely ever stoppages in play once a ball is served during a match!

It can be difficult to get around at rush hour and the inconvenience of having to go to play games in Burnaby, Richmond or Surrey if you live in Vancouver or even if you live in those communities but work in Vancouver, it's just easier to stay in the city rather than fighting rush hour to get to a volleyball game!

Game times are often scheduled between 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and never finish later than 10:45 p.m. The majority of games start at 8 p.m. and finish at 9:45 p.m.

FOCUS ON PLAY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
We don't have many meetings (one every few years) although there MAY an introduction night for new teams! There aren't a lot of complicated rules but we do rely heavily on email communications and communication via this website between our team captains and the league. The focus is on the basics:

making our schedules,
having teams come-and-play for 90 to 105 minutes the same night every week (except holidays),
teams set-up and/or tear down the nets and then go home after completion - oftentimes it may be only one of the two (i.e. set-up only or tear-down only)!

...There's virtually no waiting around for your turn to play if you come right at the scheduled game time which means there's no wasted time. Nothing fancy! Our focus is on the logistics and we leave the 'fun stuff' for you! Your job is come, have fun by playing a competitive (to your level) match and post your score within a week after the match is over.

DIVISIONAL CHOICE
All NEW volleyball teams are encouraged to play in our 'Intermediate Plus' or 'Intermediate' divisions to start. Returning teams are usually moved into the same division they finished last season in when carried forward (as long as there are enough teams to sustain that division).

START OF SEASON
In the Fall, you can pay for the Fall & Winter or ALL 3 Seasons together if you wish. New Teams register in early-September (check for notices on this site for exact dates). There are playoff tournaments (modified single knockout) where everyone participates (note despite single-knockout, all teams still get 3 playoff games to play).

For teams joining the Winter season (which see play that goes from early-January to early-April), registrations for returning teams start in late-November and for new teams, it's in the early part of December and it closes prior to Christmas Day.

The registrations for the Spring League can be done as a package deal in September or December or can be done on its own in March. Playoffs are included for each of the 3 seasons.

SCORING
If there is insufficient time to complete the last game in a best-of-5 match and the teams are tied up, the teams will need to shorten the last game in order to complete within the time allotment they have. Matches are the best-of-5-games. We try to discourage ending matches in ties...and playoff matches cannot end in ties.

RULES
We play almost all the standard FIVB rules and have a simple set of additional rules that you can access right off this website. The rules can be found on the 'Rules' page (see link on the left side of this page) or you can download a pdf version of the most up-to-date version here.

LEVELS OF SKILL

Vancouver Indoor Volleyball There are 5 levels of play that range from the most competitive to the most social where skills and technique are not overly important.

The league may decide to move teams up or down a division in the middle and at the end of each season to better balance the level of competition but only within the same night of the week. The current skill levels offered are: Advanced, Intermediate Plus, Intermediate & Rec (short for Recreational).

Normally we offer the following divisions (we prefer if new teams who are considering joining the most competitive division right away, actually start in the 'Intermediate Plus' division for the start of the season...if your team does well in Intermediate Plus after the first 4 or 5 weeks of the season, we will move you into 'Advanced' during the reseeding process that occurs at the 5-week mark!):

The League Does Offer To Help Build Teams For Players Who Want To Get On A Team
In the past 5 years, the league has taken on the task of putting teams together from the volume of players who don't have a team but sign up on this website as 'Free Agents' in their application. (links to pages that have more details on this process are mentioned below)

To create an account is free and no money will be needed from a player unless the player gets placed on a team.

Any 'RPG' (Random Player Group) team, will be comprised of 4 men and 4 women. Players that are selected to join an RPG team, will need to pay $168 to join the team officially. That will entitle you to at least 11 matches per season.

These 'RPG' coed teams are usually designed to play in either the 'Intermediate' or 'Recreational' division but occasionally Intermediate+ level teams are also created.

If players are NOT selected to join an 'RPG' team, they may be offered the opportunity to participate in the league's Monday clinic series which is designed to develop a player's volleyball skills, if there is a clinic offered. There are fees to sign up for the clinics and the prices for these will be posted in the Skills Clinic Series pages of the website.

ALL players that sign up as 'Free Agents' will be added to the league's subs list. During the process of signing up, players will be asked a number of questions (via an online questionnaire) pertaining to their availability, skill level, court position preferences and a few other details before being considered eligible to get on an RPG team.

RATIOS
As mentioned earlier, our Co-ed leagues play a "True" Coed game where there are 3 men and 3 women on the court. 4-&-2 ratios are NOT allowed. As mentioned earlier, we also offer Women's Mixer for Intermediate+ 6's on Mondays and Men's Intermediate+ 6's Mixer on Fridays.

AGE
The age of our players can vary and can be anywhere from 19 (and older) to 80 and the key emphasis is on fair competition, in a social, recreational environment. We are also a league that encourages sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct at all times especially since games are self-officiated. Matches are unsupervised and the team reps will need to get familiar with our rules and be able to share that information with their teammates.
